Jefferson Lab is a high-energy mission-specific facility and is continually expanding its scientific mission and support facilities. While this expansion will require additional resources, the lab is committed to achieving a diverse set of sustainability goals.
Jefferson Lab focuses on Energy Utilization Intensity (EUI) reduction, Water Utilization Intensity (WUI) reduction, Carbon Pollution-Free Energy (CFE) applications, advanced energy and water monitoring and benchmarking, Federal High Performance Sustainable Building (HPSB) compliance for new and existing facilities, alternative commuting strategies, Fleet Management, diversion of municipal and construction waste from landfills, green procurement strategies, sustainable electronic stewardship, and Scope 1, 2, and 3 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions reductions as defined in Federal Executive Order (EO) 14057.
EO 14057 was issued by President Biden on December 8, 2021 and placed federal agencies on a path of decarbonization and emissions reductions. Jefferson Lab has developed sustainability and resiliency strategic plans to meet the timelines set forth in the EO. By utilizing resources efficiently, leveraging utility contracting, and implementing sustainable solutions, the laboratory will reduce resource consumption and emissions while still performing world-class research and achieving our scientific mission.
