High school and middle school students invited to compete in Virginia regional science bowl competitions
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The U.S. Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility is inviting high school and middle school students from across Virginia to participate in the 2024 Regional Science Bowl Competitions. The events will test students’ knowledge in all areas of science and mathematics, and will provide an opportunity for students to showcase their academic talents.
The high school competition will be held on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024; middle school on Saturday, March 2, 2024. Both competitions will be held in-person at Jefferson Lab, in Newport News, Va.
“We are excited to welcome students from across Virginia to participate in the Regional Science Bowl Competitions,” said Rhonda Bell, Jefferson Lab science education administrator and regional coordinator for the Department of Energy (DOE) National Science Bowl. “These competitions not only challenge students and foster a passion for science, but they also play a crucial role in inspiring the next generation to pursue careers that contribute to scientific discovery."
The tournament-style program is open to teams of four students, one alternate, and a teacher who serves as an advisor and coach. Teams face-off in a fast-paced question-and-answer format, and will be tested on a range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and math.
More than 344,000 students have participated in the National Science Bowl throughout its 34-year history, and it continues to be one of the nation’s largest science competitions.
