Jefferson Lab to host in-person Virginia Regional High School Science Bowl competition
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Members of the media are invited to observe portions of the Virginia Regional High School Science Bowl on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024.
What: The U.S. Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility will host the Virginia Regional High School Science Bowl competition at Jefferson Lab,12000 Jefferson Ave., in the CEBAF Center Auditorium.
Who: Teams from 10 Virginia high schools are registered to compete in the 2024 competition, including three teams from Hampton Roads. Each team is comprised of three-five high school students and a teacher who serves as both advisor and coach.
2024 Virginia Regional High School Science Bowl Teams include:
- Alexandria City High (Alexandria)
- BASIS Independent McLean (McLean)
- Mills E. Godwin High School (Richmond)
- New Horizons Governor's School for Science and Technology (Hampton)
- Heritage High (Newport News)
- Langley High (McLean)
- McLean High (McLean)
- Ocean Lakes High (Virginia Beach)
- St. Christopher's School (Richmond)
- Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (Alexandria)
Date: Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024
Time: 8:00 a.m. – 8:45 a.m., Opening Session
4:10 p.m., Closing Session
Location: Jefferson Lab, CEBAF Center Auditorium, 12000 Jefferson Ave., Newport News, Va.
Credentials: Members of the media who would like to participate may contact the Jefferson Lab Communications Office representative listed below by noon on Friday, Feb. 2, to attend the tournament’s opening or closing sessions or to receive the results at the end of Saturday's competition.
Background: The Department of Energy (DOE) created the National Science Bowl in 1991 to encourage students to excel in mathematics and science and to pursue careers in these fields. More than 344,000 students have participated in the National Science Bowl® throughout its 34-year history, and it is one of the nation’s largest science competitions.
Middle and high school student teams from diverse backgrounds are comprised of four students, one alternate, and a teacher who serves as an advisor and coach. These teams face-off in a fast-paced question-and-answer format, being tested on a range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and math.
The DOE’s Office of Science manages the National Science Bowl® and sponsors the NSB finals competition. The Office of Science is the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States and is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time.
